The Salvation Army forms part of the Christian church and boasts an extensive social remit, providing a range of social and community services, including services for children and the elderly, those trapped in modern-day slavery, homeless people, individuals struggling with addiction, and people seeking employment.
We are currently recruiting for a Deputy Finance Director to lead the effective delivery of financial planning and financial management within The Salvation Army. The department spans processing income and expenditure, payroll, management accounting, financial accounting, legacy income, pensions, investments and the operation and maintenance of the accounting system.
As Deputy Finance Director, supporting the Territorial Financial Secretary (Finance Director) and the Secretary of Business Administration you will manage a large team (circa 100 people) to deliver and monitor finance related strategies, policy and plans including: statutory and management reporting, budgeting and budget monitoring, taxation and treasury management, cash flow forecasting, auditing and liaison with external auditors, and ensuring compliance with the Charity Commission, Companies House and HMRC. You will enable a high performing Finance Team, proactively motivating and developing the team whilst ensuring under performance issues are addressed.
It is important that you are able to demonstrate significant post CCAB-qualified accounting experience, some of which will have been within the not-for-profit sector. You will have successfully led a finance team of scale within a large and complex organisation and will have delivered against financial and non-financial KPIs and objectives. You must also have up to date knowledge of Charity SORP.
You will have excellent and communication skills combined with an ability to influence and persuade through collaboration and relationship building. You will bring experience of leading, engaging and motivating a large team being able to drive performance improvement and deliver against organisational objectives. You will have excellent organisational skills, attention to detail and the ability to prioritise work, and be able to respond to tight deadlines. You will also thrive working within The Salvation Army’s Christian ethos and values.
The role is currently home based and will transition to our Headquarters currently at 101 Newington Causeway, London SE1 6BN. Over the next 3 years we anticipate a move to a new modern headquarters at Denmark Hill, London, SE5 8BQ. This exciting new building will provide a more effective workplace to help The Salvation Army better achieve its mission.
