The Salvation Army is not afraid to speak up for people impacted by issues such as benefits, housing or the job market. They also maintain an extensive network of safe houses for the victims of modern slavery and provide emotional support for people who have escaped slavery and perhaps are impacted by Covid.
This huge and effective front-line operation is what our fundraising operation supports and this new role is critical to the next evolution of how we raise funds for an ever-increasing need for The Salvation Army’s practical – and caring – ministry.
This Head of Community and Membership Fundraising is new within the Marketing & Fundraising Department and will bring together a number of existing teams (including events, challenge events, annual appeals and church giving) and will spearhead a major new development supporting local Corps to fundraise.
Having achieved astonishing growth in income over the past 20 years (predominantly through growth in individual giving), the current structure is, to be honest, creaking at the seams. Everyone is working incredibly hard but it is now time to put in place a new structure which will have empowerment, lean working and collaboration at its heart.
To make sure we get the right person for this important new role, we are happy to offer some flexibility in terms of number of hours worked and where/when they are worked. You could be based at Salvation Army Headquarters or if you are home based you would need to come in on occasions, likely to be once a month. Currently Headquarters is at the Elephant and Castle in London but in 2023 it will be moving to a new, modern building at Denmark Hill, London, SE5 8BQ, conveniently situated just across the road from Denmark Hill station.
So, what skills are experience are we looking for?
You will need to be a highly successful fundraiser who knows all about best practice. As a strong, natural manager you’ll be comfortable developing plans, setting and managing budgets and managing staff. You may have been on a senior leadership team but if not, you’ll be ready for that next step and looking forward to playing a part in the leadership of the Marketing & Fundraising Department.
The Salvation Army is a very ‘values driven’ organisation so part of the interview process will be making sure you feel this is the right place for you.
The recruitment process is being handled for us by Valerie Morton, who knows The Salvation Army well. If you would like to have an informal chat about the role you are welcome to contact her on 01767 677661 or at valerie@valeriemorton.co.uk.
