The Salvation Army are looking to appoint two enthusiastic and motivated 'Peer Navigators' as part of a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) funded study entitled "SHARPS: Testing the feasibility and acceptability of a peer-delivered, relational intervention for people with problem substance use who are homeless, to improve health outcomes, quality of life and social functioning, and reduce harms". The Peer Navigators will join a wide and diverse team to deliver a relationship-based intervention to those experiencing problem drug and alcohol use and homelessness. The intervention will provide holistic health checks, and practical and emotional support.
Peer Navigators will support participants to stabilise their lives through the development of trusting relationships. They will help people to engage with services that can meet their health and social needs and receive appropriate assessments by such services. Peer Navigators will also attend appointments and provide practical support. The successful candidates will play a key role at the beginning of the study in developing the intervention and training manual, in collaboration with experts in homelessness, health and substance use. Having lived experience of homelessness and/or problem drug/alcohol use is essential to these roles. Peer Navigators will be provided with daily support and management through the service in which they work, as well as regular supervision from a Clinical Psychologist.
