Volunteer – Kitchen Helper

About the role

This role involves working under the supervision of local leadership to provide a breakfast for local homeless people and those in need.

Location:

Lochinvar Hall, Balham Salvation Army, 38 Balham High Road, SW12 6AH

Time commitment: Thursdays 8:00am-10:30am and will be agreed with Major Michael Eden

Role requirements:

What you’ll be doing:               

• Help create a relaxed and nonjudgement environment
• Assist the preparation and cooking of a basic breakfast
• Help serve the breakfast to local homeless and people in need
• Clean the kitchen after sessions to the highest Food Hygiene Standards

Skills/experience needed:

• Knowledge of Food Hygiene
• Basic Catering Skills
• Good Communication skills
• Customer Service Skills

Practical Considerations

• As part of the application process there will be an informal discussion to give you a chance to ask questions and for us to talk about the role
• You’ll also need to provide 2 references, complete a disclosure check if one is applicable to the role (see role description) and complete our online training modules.   
• Once you start and so that you and we can be assured that you are happy in your role there will be an introductory period. 
• At TSA we don’t want you to be out of pocket by volunteering, so we are happy to reimburse any agreed out of pocket expenses you incur whilst volunteering.

Are you someone who loves bringing joy to others through creativity, conversation, and care? We're looking for compassionate and enthusiastic volunteers to support our Older People's Services Activities Team — helping to create engaging, life-enriching experiences for care home residents.

About the Role: Volunteer Activities Support

As a Volunteer, you'll work alongside our Activities Team Leader to help bring energy, laughter, and connection to residents through a variety of activities and outings. This is a wonderful opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of older people while gaining valuable experience in a warm and supportive environment.

Key Responsibilities:

• Help plan the weekly activity schedule with the Activities Team Leader.
• Prepare and deliver activities such as crafts, games, music, storytelling, quizzes, light exercise, and themed events.
• Support both group and 1:1 sessions tailored to residents’ interests and needs.
• Accompany residents on trips outside the home
• Encourage participation and engagement, creating a positive and inclusive environment for all.

Ideal Volunteer:

• A warm, friendly, and patient manner.
• Good communication skills and a genuine interest in older people and people living with dementia.
• Comfortable working as part of a team and using your own initiative.
• Reliable, with the ability to be flexible (we’ll work with your availability).
